Playas de Poniente

It consists of the coast stretch between San Jose and the lighthouse of Cabo de Gata.

An earth road, opened in its most part to the traffic, gives access to several virgin beaches and coves, some of them nudist, where Los Genoveses, El Barronal, Mónsul and Media Luna stand out by its unsurpassable beauty. The first one is a size beach with white sand, shallow waters and a little group of dunes. Besides, this area receives its name of the fact landing made by the Genoveses. Other historical fact, the leaving of the Spanish ships to the Lepanto battle, just outs its characteristic of natural anchorage. The Barronal, which you can accede to by a sand road, is a spacious nudist beach surrounded by basalt that served as scene in the shooting of the Spanish film "Bwana".

Going on for the earth road, the next beach with easy access is Mónsul, which is flanking on the left by a rampant dune, moulded according to the slope by the west or east wind. Together with the headland called "La Peineta", they are its features more characteristic. Moreover, Mónsul is one of the settings preferred of the province. Here vas shot scenes of films likes "Indiana Jones and the last crossing" and "The Munchaüsen Baron". Media Luna further on, is a little cove of fine sand protected by volcanic walls.

If we decided to continue rising the road, we find a fence, which hinders the access to the vehicles. In this point, on the left side, we can take a path, which goes to Cala Carbón, a cove surrounded by a volcanic dike.

The access from here to Cabo de Gata can only be made on foot or by bicycle, so if you wish arrive by car, you must return to San José to take a regional road.
